HISTORY

The Sioux Falls Sports Authority was formed in 2006 by community leaders to recruit major sporting events to the Sioux Falls area. The organization attracts international, national, regional and state sporting events by operating, leasing, enhancing or owning sports facilities in the Sioux Falls area. It is run by a board of directors made up of 15 community members, an executive director and project director.

Since its formation it has become an active member of The National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) and has successfully attained its first significant event, the Summit League Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments. The 2009 Summit League Tournaments was the first time ESPN broadcasted a "Live-Nationally Televised" event in Sioux Falls and South Dakota.   The 2010 and 2011 Summit League tournament were overwhelming successes, with SDSU Women and the Oakland University Men heading on the the NCAA Basketball Tournament for the second year in a row.  The SFSA is very excited and confident about the upcoming 2012 Summit League Basketball Tournament March 3-6, 2012.   Get your tickets now at www.ticketmasters.com

Sioux Falls also had the privilage of hosting the Summit League's Track and Field Championships - May 13-14, 2011 at the University of Sioux Falls - Sanford Sports Athletic Complex.  The weather wasn't the best, but the performances were simply fantastic with many, many conference records being set.  We also had the opportunity to host the 2011 Summit League Baseball Tournament - May 26-28, 2011 at the Sioux Falls Baseball Stadium .  The competition was fearce and we set All-Time attendance records.  When the dust settled after a very entertaining and highly competitive champtionship game between South Dakota State University and Oral Roberts University, the Golden Eagles from Oral Roberts University went on to represent the Summit League in the NCAA Baseball Tournament.

The Sioux Falls Sports Authority is pleased to announce the overwhelmning success of the Second Annual Sioux Falls Marathon held on September 11, 2011 in conjunction with the Sioux Falls Half-Marathon & Miracle 5K presented by Sanford Health.  We had 465 runners in our second year with some outstanding performances by many, many people.  Go to www.siouxfallsmarathonhalfmarathon.com to review last years results.  The Sioux Falls Sports Authority iwas proud to add a new and exciting event/race to an already very successful event, thus providing more opportunities for runners and the Sioux Falls community to shine.  Mark your calendar for next year's event...September 9, 2012!
